Experimental Sound Design for Podcasting and Video

Mondays, November 12th and 19th, 5:30 - 8:30pm - 

Sound is a raw material—just like paint, ink, paper, or clay. Sound can be manipulated—cut, pasted, sampled, blended, layered, and shaped. Experiments in sound can take podcasts, video works, and other media projects to the next level by building atmosphere, generating complexity, and enriching narrative. In this workshop, you’ll learn processes in Adobe Audition that can help you craft audio in artful and intuitive ways. You’ll learn techniques for editing and mixing interviews, field recordings, and found sounds beyond the norm. You’ll also learn how to find open-source, Creative Commons audio online to use in your work. This is radio in a blender, audio collage, melted music, and remixed dialog. Get ready to test ideas, embrace the unexpected, and imagine new possibilities in sound.

While this course is open to beginners, students who have taken Intro to Podcasting, Podcasting for Everyone, or Intro to Audio Recording are especially well prepared for this course. All students should have basic computer literacy and should be comfortable learning new technologies. Students should bring a flash drive or other media storage device or be prepared to store large project files in cloud platforms like Googe Drive or Dropbox.

Instructor: Ariana Martinez

Ariana Martinez is an artist and storyteller working across narrative audio, sculptural installation, and print media. They have worked as a design researcher to imagine audience engagement strategies with Rhode Island Public Radio and are an active collaborator with SMASH!, a group for gender minorities working in audio at the PRX Podcast Garage. Ariana sees audio as a raw material that can be creatively manipulated and works to break down the barriers to technical audio production for artists working in all media. Ariana’s work includes a public audio/video installation designed to activate historic Fort Adams in Newport, large-scale sculptures situated in audio environments, prints and drawings, and stop-motion video works made from analog print processes and found sound. Location and Parking

AS220 Media Arts is located at the Mercantile at 131 Washington Street Providence, Rhode Island on the 2nd floor. The entrance is located at the back of the building on Lucie Way; use the entrance under the AS220 Labs sign and head upstairs.

There is metered on-street parking, and the Mercantile is also located near a parking garage with entry on Washington Street -- just look for the big blue parking sign.

Important Class Policies

Please be respectful of the short time you and the other participants have to learn, and be on time. If you arrive more than a half an hour late, we will not be able to teach you. Plan ahead, it always takes time to find on street parking.
To cancel your reservation you must email industries@as220.org at least two weeks in advance, or risk losing your payment.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES

If minimum number is not met in class enrollment, the teacher may opt to cancel class. If this is the case, we will give a full refund of class payment and first choice to enroll in future classes. We will attempt to give as much notice as possible, thank you for your understanding.
